Boat Prep & De-Winterization Checklist
Spring Is Here! Let’s run through a quick review of Spring prep for your boat.
- Check engine hours from the last service.
Typically, engine hours are marked on the oil filter housings, or check your service records. Volvo recommends engine and drive service every 200hrs or once a year (whichever comes first). - Engine fluids:
Check engine oil before startup. Make sure coolant level is up to the tabs in the reservoir. Check drive/transmission oil level and color. - Clear any debris from sea strainer basket.
Confirm water circulation with engine running. Inspect for leaks. - De-winterization:
Remove loose heaters from engine compartment. Fill and flush the freshwater system if propylene glycol was used. Confirm water system has no leaks and the pump shuts down when full pressure is reached. - Flush holding tank and add treatment.
Check the system for leaks and change the inline carbon vent filter if applicable. - Run heating system:
Check for excessive smoke at start-up. Check glow plug and replace screen yearly. Service heating unit for reliable use during your boating season. - Inspect wiper blades for deterioration and wiper arms for corrosion.
Top off windshield wash reservoir if optioned. - Inspect anchor windlass and ground tackle for corrosion.
We recommend disassembly, cleaning, and lubricating yearly. Apply anti-corrosion spray to motor and electrical connections. - Make sure mooring lines are in good condition and replace them if damaged.
If lines are stiff, soak in fresh water with a small amount of detergent. - Replace worn-out fender covers. These protect the hull from deep scratches in the gel coat that typically require wet sanding and buffing to remove.ย
- Before your first adventure:
Pull away from the dock and head out for a short test run to verify that all systems are functioning well.

Destination Anchorages
Now that your boat is in running order, itโs time to cruise! Let’s start with a few close to Bellinghamโฆ some that are maybe not as well-known.
Bowman Bay
It’s on the southwest side of Fidalgo. There is a floating dock and enough room to anchor a few boats. As you enter, you need to favor the South side of the entrance. Once inside, this is a well-protected anchorage with many trails on land to explore. Also a great place to explore with your kayak or SUP. WATCH OUT! There is a strong current close to Deception Pass!
James Island
This gem is often forgotten. You need to pay attention to the tidal current when dropping anchor, but the mooring balls offer a good safe spot to stay for lunch or a quiet night, away from busier anchorages.
Garrison Bay
Our last anchorage, while more popular, is usually not overcrowded, and has great holding and protection from all wind direction. You can enter from the West side of San Juan Island (South of Henry Island), or by the Roche Harbor entrance.
Either way, STAY ALERT and navigate with caution as the channel has many rocks and can be narrow in certain places.
The bay is safe to play in with any water toys (SUP, kayaks, windsurfing, etc). You also can access and visit English Camp.
ENJOY!
Weโll be sure to highlight more anchorages in our next newsletter.ย
